State Senate 2nd Suffolk District

The Massachusetts State Senate, along with the State House of Representatives, forms the legislative branch of the state of Massachusetts. The legislative chamber creates laws and sets the budget. Duties of members include passing bills on public policy matters, setting levels for state spending, raising and lowering taxes, and voting to uphold or override gubernatorial vetoes. There are 40 total seats in the State Senate. The length of the term is 2 years.

Sonia Chang-Diaz (D)

The current officeholder is Sonia Chang-Diaz (D), who will not run for reelection. Chang-Diaz announced her candidacy for the 2022 gubernatorial race before withdrawing.

Liz Miranda (D) won a tough five-way Democratic primary, beating out Nika Elugardo (by 6 points), Dianne Wilkerson (by 11 points), Miniard Culpepper (by 18 points), and James Grant (by 30 points).

Miranda is currently a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing the 5th Suffolk District since 2019. Her recent committee work includes serving on the Community Development and Small Businesses Joint Committee, Public Safety and Homeland Security Joint Committee, and the Human Resources and Employee Engagement Committee (Vice chair).

No official Republican candidate is on the ballot for the 2022 general election.
