Mt. Surreal
Disco Doom is nothing if not patient on the superlative title track of its forthcoming LP Mt. Surreal, working through the musical motifs like a chimp on Thorazine solving a Rubik’s Cube.
Shades of Pavement in the off-kilter pop swagger. Shades of SYR-era Sonic Youth in the confidence of sound experiments that know exactly where they want to land. The band is capable of poppier grooves, like the bubblegum indie rocker “Rogue Wave,” but we’d rather hear them pop a squat in the land of artcore rifferdom.
Our highlighted track “Mt. Surreal” pops its squat. By the time they’re winding down around the 5:46 mark, you’ll feel the urge to break into a richly-deserved slow clap.
