Madlib: “Düsseldorf”

Take your pick, this album is a bowl of two-minute long mixed nuts.

I picked “Düsseldorf” because Neu! formed in Düsseldorf, and if you’re a hip hop DJ that wants to dip into the rock n roll stew to see what’s cooking, Neu! is a fabulous point of reference for sampling. Madlib could do a lot of brilliant things with the krautrock guitars of Neu! burning up all our collective synapses.

And he probably has elsewhere. But this track is not it – instead of guitars we’ve got a slippy, liquid, electro riff storming the barricade. Points deducted for the lame “funny” sample to close out the track. Corny as fuck. Guys who sample things for a living, like Madlib, just can’t help themselves sometimes.
