Mamalarky: “Feels So Wrong”

Ornate. Baroque. I’d call it “rococo” too but Arcade Fire shamed us all for using that adjective years ago.

There’s a definite bounce to our highlighted track “Feels So Wrong” by Mamalarky. A bounce with a light and breezy feel. But ‘feels’ can be deceptive. This is breezy like Steely Dan, which packs a ton of complexity into their jazz lounge troubadorring. Is Mamalarky a star in the same constellation?

The lyrics are straightforward. The line “It feels so wrong” constitutes more than half of the lyrics, and it seems like the kind of lyric that would really let a band rip. But somehow the mood of the song and delivery remains hemmed in, held in check, kept in reserve, like everyone was afraid of blowing the take.

Nobody blows the take. Off Hex Key. Via Epitaph.
