A guide to the 2024 Boston Music Awards

The 2024 Boston Music Awards is at Big Night Live on December 11.

Hump Day News was nominated for Best Music Publication.

You can vote for all the nominees here.

To honor our glorious symbolic inclusion and insufferable clout chasing, we’re rolling out the BMAde Betterz series for 2024. In this series we send the nominees through the meat grinder to yield three main categories of sodium-enriched meat byproducts.

  • The “New To Us”

    • Never heard of them, or at least never heard them. But they’re on the list, so let’s have a listen.

  • The “House Specials”

    • We’ve covered these acts, we treasure these acts, we 100% get why they’ve been nominated.

  • The “New To You”

    • These artists didn’t make the list, but they should have!

Hip Hop Artist of the Year // Nominees

BIA // BoriRock // Clark D // Cousin Stizz // Joyner Lucas // kei // Latrell James // Millyz // Nay $peaks // Termanology

Stepping into Joyner Lucas’ Bandcamp is like stepping into a time machine. Flash back, the artist bio is talking about the upcoming release of Low Frequency Oscillators in 2013. Flash forward to 2024, and he’s dropping music videos on Youtube with Jelly Roll cameos. Time flies.

BoriRock’s Bandcamp, on the other hand, is up-to-date and full of fresh offerings. You can’t necessarily “sneak preview” stream them all, but we found one track “Zinggaveli” to embed. A downtempo cruiser dedicated to the BOS<>NYC loop. Extra points for the Zendaya album cover.

Nay $peaks took home the 2023 New Artist of the Year at last year’s BMAs, so it’s no surprise to see her back on lists. Hump Day News just covered Latrell James at a mostly post punk & experimental music fest, Fuzzstival. Any opportunity to perform tracks off his latest LP Running In Place. And Kei wowed the crowd as headliner at the Orange Stage on Friday night of Boston Calling.

Where’s al.divino from? Somewhere in Massachusetts, so throw him into the mix. He’s been releasing a string of killer, oddly-priced albums that all come with a warning: “DO NOT LEAK OR PUT ON YOUTUBE WITHOUT DIRECT CONSENT OR FACE POSSIBLE LEGAL REPERCUSSIONS.” As long as you’re putting out a warning, you might as well remove the “possible” to make it maximally effective, right?
