The Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is the elected head of the executive branch and the highest state office in Massachusetts. The governor is elected by popular election every four years and is not subject to term limits.

Charles Baker (R), not running

The current office holder is Charles Baker (R), first elected in 2014. He is choosing not to run for re-election in 2022 after winning by margins of 30+ points in the two previous elections.

The primary will feature a battle between Republican contenders Geoff Diehl (R) and Chris Doughty (R).

On the democratic side, Maura Healey (D) remains after Sonia Chang-Diaz unofficially withdrew (she will still appear on the primary ballot). Healey is the current Attorney General of Massachusetts, first elected to the office in 2007.

Geoff Diehl has previously served as member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Before he left office in 2019, he was a member of the following committees: Global Warming and Climate Change, Technology and Intergovernmental Affairs, and Housing Joint.

Chris Doughty is “an entrepreneur and devoted father and husband.”
