Follow Thru

The five-piece punk band Follow Thru out of Rhode Island rode to the rescue when Scotty Saints and the True Believers dropped off the bill at the last second.

I mean, no one is going to cry into their beer if the bill is three bands long instead of four bands long at the Midway Cafe matinee. But there is a certain mentality, a certain ethos, a certain code around keeping your commitments when it comes to playing dates. So if disaster strikes and your band can’t make it, no big deal, everyone understands, just try to find an appropriate replacement.

Follow Thru mixed punk, pop punk, a bit of ska, to the immediate pleasure of at least two dedicated stompers in the pit. The fronter vocalist brought his little kid, a toddler outfitted with big earmuffs and propped up on the ledge at stage right. I’ve said it before – punk matinees tend to be family affairs.

The band brought along a merch dude, who they kept referring to as “bored.”

Circus Battalion

Circus Battalion have a new album out, called Made In Post-Truth America. Hey, at least it’s made in America.

The set from the four-piece reeled off a number of songs from the new release, including “Snorting Glass.” The track is about crashing and burning on Mass & Cass, one of many sketches of a world gone mad.

Someone in the crowd told the guitarist to “turn it up.” Sometimes a band asks the crowd for their opinion on the levels, and the response from the crowd is “turn it up” around 99% of the time. I’m not saying it’s wrong to seek feedback from the crowd, but take the recommendation with a grain of salt.

Structure Sounds

Another band from Rhode Island, the Ocean State. The four-piece Structure Sounds sizzled, and they have an appreciation for Narragansett Beer, as attested to by this video for “Bury Me At Dusk.”

Did the price of Narragansett tallboys at Midway Cafe rise from $3.50 to $4? They used to be $3, which is not only cheaper, but you don’t have to fiddle with quarters. Now I guess we’re back to telling quarters to fuck off.

The Prozacs

There was supposed to be some massive snowstorm on its way, coming later in the evening. The matinee show was in the clear. Even closer The Prozacs, who took the stage around 7PM or so.

The band started out of Westfield in 2001; toured locally, nationally, and internationally; and put out a lot of music in a career spanning more than two decades.

They also roll with a shit ton of merch. No word on whether they brought a bored merch dude too.
