Corridors
Massachusetts’ Ghost Painted Sky lays the groundwork for a new full-length album by releasing our highlighted track “Corridors.” It’s a revamp of an earlier version put out on the Darkness Calling compilation “You Are Still Not Alone” (2021).
Doomy, gloomy, the song sports a spindly guitar motif and a propulsive rhythm that chases you down dark hallways. The lyrics are posted up at Bandcamp, so let’s examine the rhyme scheme.
Welcome to the corridor of my life (A)
So many fallen behind (B)
I’ll drag them down with me (C)
Acting like no one could see (C)
Didn’t want to believe (D)
Oh, get away from me (C)
It was always such a tragic scene (E)
Couldn’t see through me (C)
Aimed to deceive (D)
A way to escape the blame (F)
Cast the doubt away (G)
Swallow my shame (F)
The stanzas flirt with the terza rima rhyme scheme (ABA, CDC, etc.), especially second and fourth. Otherwise the flow is fairly free. The similarity of sound among the phonemes marked (C) and (D) and (E) threatens to become monotonous, but introduces a kind of woozy claustrophobia that jibes well with the nightmarescape Ghost Painted Sky creates in the “Corridors.”
