Keel Timing
Manchester Orchestra sends out the Mannheim Steamroller vibes, right? At least in the holiday music category. Da ‘Rollz produced the #1 Christmas music album of all time: Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, which just enjoyed its 35th anniversary.
That’s a steep hill to climb, but Atlanta’s Manchester Orchestra gives us a tasteful, accomplished indie folk parry with Christmas Music Vol. 1. Volume 1? There’s multiple volumes?
Indeed, rumor has it you can obtain Vol. 2 of Christmas Music via their Patreon.
Our highlighted track “Keel Timing,” off The Million Masks of God, has nothing to do with the above holiday cheer. The track lays down a funky bass groove that builds into a singable anthem. Squirreled away among the hooks are nooks and crannies perfect for a little emo introspection – then it’s back to blastoff. Shades of American Football, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Cold War Kids.

Massachusetts’ Sapling craft bouncy, danceable punk with solid hooks and uptempo attack. It’s no surprise that they connected the dots to Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill fame on our highlighted track “Bikini BDRK,” off No Sequoia.
Boston’s Linnea’s Garden fashions dance punk with glam overtones on their recent full-length Fashion Show.
Boston’s blindspot crafts electropop dance bangers with enough buzz and churn to please the alternative rock crowd as well.
Boston’s Happy Little Clouds drip psych rock in our highlighted track “Beneath,” off Shift.
Boston’s Gene Dante & The Future Starlets is glampop with a full-barrelled rock n roll attack.
Somerville’s Julie Rhodes puts a little pepper in her lyrical twang, serving up spicy takes on modern Americana.
