Stage 8: Jay Vine Sees Double
The winner of Stage 8 looks a lot like the winner of Stage 6 – it’s Jay Vine (Alpecin-Deceuninck) who is turning into a climbing revelation at the 2022 La Vuelta. Remco Evenepoel (QST), not far behind in either stage, holds fast to the red jersey.
Stage 8 was a rock n roller with a series of category-3s and -2s that punched the riders in the mouth straight out of the gates. GC contenders Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), Richard Carapaz (IGD), and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) tried to get a grip on the race early and put pressure on Evenepoel’s lead.
The real story of the day, though, was Vine’s mountain points domination. He picked up points on all the available categorized climbs on top of winning the entire stage.
Marc Soler (UAE) and Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) tried to challenge the Australian up the final ascent, but he powered away for the solo win.
At a gap of a little over a minute back the main GC contenders, including Primoz Roglic (JV), rolled in together as a group. No rivals were able to put time into Evenepoel.
Sam Bennett holds on to the green jersey while Jay Vine is suddenly dominating the king of the mountains contest.
American Sepp Kuss suffered a bit and fell in the overall standings down to 26th. He remains the highest-ranked American in the overall standings.
