Stage 3: Irish Eyes Smile Again

Sprinter Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) enjoyed another sprint victory on Stage 3 as La Vuelta 2022 completed its prelude in the Netherlands with a Breda/Breda loop. It’s a fine run of success for Bennett on the world tour after a dry spell of a couple of years. Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and Daniel McLay (Arkea-Samsic) came in second and third, respectively, earning time bonuses.

Stage 3 was another flat course in a flat country, but one category-4 climb ensured that King of the Mountain Julius van den Berg (EF) put up a defense of the polka dot jersey. Van den Berg will hold onto the KOM jersey as the race returns to Spain after a rest/travel day on Monday.

The mountains will pick up in the home country as the sprinters say goodbye to friendly terrain for a while in the 21-stage race.

Notable abandon: GC hopeful Michael Woods (I-PT) crashed and abandoned on Stage 3.
