Stage 14: Ecuador’s Pride Strikes Again

Richard Carpaz (Ineos-Grenadiers) strikes again on the climb of Sierra de la Pandera, taking his second stage at La Vuelta 2022. Hard to imagine, but the previous Grand Tour winner had been flying beneath the radar at nineteen minutes back of the red jersey after Stage 11. A win on Stage 12 and 14 will not make the Ecuadorian a threat for the GC, but gives him plenty to celebrate on the 21-stage race.

Stage 14

The other big story is the struggles of Remco Evenepoel (QST) up the final climb of Stage 14. The route takes the rider on an escalator to hell, finishing up a category-3, -2, and -1 climb to the finish.

Lawson Craddock

The red jersey wearing Belgian had looked nigh invincible at the midpoint of La Vuelta. The relentless mountain stages, however, had their say. Coming up the final climb of Sierra de la Pandera, Evenepoel faltered, allowing Primoz Roglic (JV), then Enric Mas (MOV) to get up the road, along with Miguel Angel Lopez (AST). The trio finished behind Carapaz, but any time gain on Evenepoel is significant. Roglic and Mas will be looking to take even more time off the Belgian on Stage 15, back 1:49 and 2:43, respectively.

The green and polka dot jerseys remain with Mads Pedersen (TSF) and Jay Vine (ADC), respectively.

American Lawson Craddock (BEX) continues to be the highest-ranked of his countrymen after Stage 14.

No notable exits.
