Transition East
Chicago’s Angel Bat Dawid taps into something powerful and mysterious on the instrumental “Transition East.”
The clarinet bobs and weaves while the sustained keys set the mood. A drum machine keeps a steady beat, posting an unchanged percussive motif throughout the piece. That beat should sound a little corny, like a Casio drum sample that someone forgot to turn off, but here it works. Here it sounds like the heartbeat of a sentient meteoroid floating across star systems in search of you.
There’s no hint of Angel Bat Dawid’s exceptional voice on this 7” but the clarinet song is proof enough that her lungs have the gift of gust.
