Otis Shanty: “Early Birds”
A ferocious little opening tagline on this song blooms into a dreamy pop stunner. Shades of 10,000 Maniacs, the observational lyrics of Suzanne Vega, and the neu-soft rock sensibility of Madeline Kenney. What sound are we hearing about two-thirds through the song? It’s got vibes of a theremin but the precision of synth keys. The title track of Otis Shanty’s Early Birds is a worthy opener on an EP that shimmers, stirs, and offers more depth than most LPs at twice or thrice the length. Ah, the gem that is the perfect EP. Shout out to whoever recorded and produced this golden nugget.
