Joy Guidry: “Angels”

Neo-gospel. Spiritual jazz. A choir of voices at the start, along with Joy Guidry, no other backing instruments during the intro. The continuous key changes on our highlighted track “Angels” are uplifting, I suppose, because the pitch trajectory bends upward. But damn is it a little unsettling, a little unbalanced and slightly atonal. When the more conventional jazz instrumental kicks in after the two-minute mark, you’ll breathe a sigh of relief, and welcome the vocals back for a soft landing in the second half. This song turns into a real swinger. Off Amen. Via Whited Sepulchre Records.
