Hey I’m Outside: “Racecar”

We’re getting Guv’ner vibes from the duo Hey I’m Outside. You know, that duo that put out a few records on Ecstatic Peace and Merge in the 90s? The theme of our highlighted track “Racecar” feels right up Guv’ner’s alley: a kind of tongue-in-cheek adult homage to a source of fascination for toddlers. Wheeley machines that go zoom-zoom. Except the HIO rendition is written in earnest with less toddler posturing, more Dad bonding time. Cleaner, poppier sound too. There’s no deconstructed artcore vamping, just sweet and sentimental hooks, fills, and progressions surfacing from the liminal depths of indie rock’s collective daydream.
