Gift: “Dune”
When’s the next Dune coming out? Dune: Part Two, by cinematic world beater Denis Villeneuve.
The David Lynch version of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel epic is much maligned. Why so? People complain they can’t follow the plot, and they take Lynch’s own repudiation of the film as confirmation that they’re allowed to ignore it.
Fools! Infidels! Lynch panned the film because he didn’t get say on the final cut. Not because the film didn’t “make sense” according to the lowest common denominator of narrative logic. You seen Lynch’s other films? You seen Inland Empire? You think he’s down on his Dune because it telescoped the novel’s story in a way that was too difficult for Joe and Jane Movieplex to grok? Nonsense.
All that being said, lay some Chalamet on me. Ready for this doll-faced kid to try and fail at playing the tough guy for the next 20 years of his career à la Leonardo DiCaprio.
