Tom Yum Soup Is Good

Daniela Schächter Trio is not background music at The Mad Monkfish on Saturday, 4 May 2024.

The Noodle Soup Challenge at the jazzy Central Square spot marches on!

The bathroom

Hey, you want to know a secret?

The Mad Monkfish is located right next to the Middle East and has the perfect early start time for its jazz shows to accommodate a beautiful music double header. (OK, maybe not a secret, but did you know?)

Hit the 7PM jazz show at The Mad Monkfish, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and then catch the the night show at Middle East, usually with a start time of around 9PM.

That’s the Central Square Double Header.

And while you’re looking through the menu at the jazz spot, don’t pass up the noodle soup section. The Noodle Soup Challenge marches on, as Hump Day News tries to conquer (and enjoy, but in a conquering fashion) every noodle soup on the menu.

Thus far, Duck Noodle Soup, Shoyu Ramen, Lanna Noodle Soup, and Tom Yum Noodle Soup. The duck soup takes the cake for the most enjoyable with a rich, fatty stock that‘s a meal on its own. The Lanna Noodle Soup brings up the rear with a head-scratching delivery that’s more powerbowl than soupy soup.

On Saturday night, we broke the seal on the Tom Yum Noodle Soup. A little spicy, a little sweet, all good. A strong second-place finish to the Duck Noodle Soup.

But the challenge is not finished yet! More noodle soups to savor, stay tuned.

Daniela Schächter Trio

The Daniela Schächter Trio held down the jazz spot on Saturday night with two sparkling sets. Players include Daniela Schächter on piano, John Lockwood on bass, and Mark Walker on drums. A special guest sat in for some bossa nova vocal adventures. Didn’t catch the name, if you know, let me know in the comments. Who has time to stick around and gather facts when another gig is waiting at the Middle East. The Rumble Finals, no less. This is a busy music town sometimes.
