Forsyth throws us into a world that repels as it compels

Stream “Fires”

England’s Keeley Forsyth returns with the latest album Limbs.

“Going to a church // Where sadness lies.”

Forsyth’s lyrics evoke without determining their subject matter in too fine detail. The result is a kind of brooding ambiguity, which might become ponderous in another artist’s hands, but Forsyth holds the line with skill. Her vocals are cutting, a scalpel drawn over the bare flesh of strings, synth, and samples.

Shades of Scott Walker in his dark & dreary mode. Shades of Druid ritual. In our highlighted track “Fires” Forsyth throws us into a world that repels as it compels, like a nightmare from which we can’t wake.
