Garage punk, sure. But the artcore impulse is unmistakable here in our highlighted track “Void” from Ty Segall. Shades of a sunnier FACS. You know, a kind of skull-boring repetition in the guitar theme, but with a softened edge and a sweet enough refrain to elevate the pop sensibility.
Still, you feel like a mouse stuck in a maze listening to this song. Shades of Phish’s “Maze” because why not? The wandering fingers across the keyboard adds a little aleatoric glee. Just what you were looking for, right?
Warning: the song shifts gears about halfway through, but you’ll find that out for yourself when you get there. Enjoy the video, which perpetuates Segall’s fascination with strange masks. Off the full-length Three Bells.
