90 Day Men: “Jupiter and Io”

Numero Group strikes again. A 5xLP set of selections from 90 Day Men’s studio albums, singles, outtakes, and assorted unreleased material. Holy crap. The Chicago band is punk, post punk, art punk, indie rock, and full of sacerdotal enthusiasm for their minimalist attack.

Our highlighted track “Jupiter and Io” references the mythological affair between the Greek god (Zeus, or Jupiter in Latin) and Io. There was always a subtext (sometimes a supertext, or just text) of rape in stories about Jupiter’s sexual encounters. Is this a song about sexual assault, or merely seduction?

Maybe the band just thought the title sounded cool. The vocalist sounds like a dead ringer for the vocalist from Black Helicopter.
