Marquis Hill: “Lullaby” (ft. Joel Ross)
Written By Michael Gutierrez

“Lullaby” (ft. Joel Ross) off New Gospel Revisited by Marquis Hill.
Joel Ross’ vibraphone on Marquis Hill’s composition “Lullaby” is mesmerizing. True to its title, the short number will lull you into a deep calm, edging up next to a shared border between jazz, gospel, and ambient music that you didn’t know existed.
There’s a strange concession at the end of the piece, as Ross drops the dreamscape vibes for more standard jazz noodling. It’s as if we’re being awakened from a brief but beautiful dream and dropped suddenly into the next fantasy caper.
It’s a live album, by the way — so don’t hit shuffle, unless you want some head scratching transitions.
