BMAde Betterz

Hump Day News helps the 2023 Boston Music Awards do Best Song better.

Didja see? The Boston Music Awards nominations started rolling out in September.

BMA Nominating Committee

What are the BMAs? Well, the annual music awards ceremony is presented by the whiskey drink Jack Daniels. It’s held at Big Night Live on December 20th. Tickets are sold for seats you sit in. And the logo looks like Paul Revere on a horse, carrying a boombox?

The website says the nominations were pinned down by September 18th.

If you have the time and prolific output, do what Pile did this year: release a killer album (All Fiction) earlier in the year, reap the extra attention won in a relatively quiet time of the year for album announcements, then drop a short & sweet EP (Hot Air Balloon) in the last quarter to remind everyone that you’re still alive and you’re awesome.

Evil genius!

SONG OF THE YEAR

Is this the sneaky most important category?

At the end of the day we’re just talking about pop music, and music trades in songs. Who cares about Best Artist this, or Best Album that. A gem pop song carves its signature into the tree bark of eternity.

Here’s the list of BMA nominees:

Anjimile’s “The King,” Clark D’s “It's A stick Up” (ft. Kei), Izzy Heltai’s “Running Out,” Kei’s “Berserk,” Little Fuss’s “She's a Liar,” Mallcops’ “To The Side” (ft. Layzi), Squirrel Flower’s “Full Time Job,” STEFAN THEV’s “Sparks Don't Fly!”, STL GLD & Darlingside’s “Shimmer,” and Tall Heights’ “Dammit.”

Hump Day News wrote up Anjimile’s “The King.” How could you not write up the title track of a former local yokel’s album, off 4AD? We ran across Izzy Heltai’s “Running Out” a little after. Instead of “She’s a Liar,” we wrote up Little Fuss’ “Lost Art.” Taylor Swift vibrations. And we wrote up Mallcop’s collab with Layzi during our Hope Fest coverage.

Let’s improve the list with a few adds.

How about Main Era’s “Clandestine Sadness”?

Can’t quit that thrashpop strummer.

How about Wallace Field’s “All Costs”

The shimmering title track “All Costs” off her latest album. The soft and subtle indie folk stunner builds into an unforgettable monument to everyday catastrophe and the prospect of rebirth.

How about Pink Navel’s “Present Vendor”?

The rapper and beat stylist has been showcasing the track all year long. An homage to an ancillary character in a video game. Beneath the popstroke absurdity lies a deeper social critique. We think. Killer lyrics and flow on top, all day long.

How about this body is all i have in this world’s “Swimming/Numbers?”

You can’t close out a list of nominations for Best Song without including a track that goes epic. TBIAIHITW swings for the fences in 6+ minutes that spin out like gazey, psych-laden postpunk theater. Pop your popcorn.
