Tree: “Benz”
A devil-may-care playfulness sets the unlikely mood for Tree’s musical output in the final few weeks of freedom before heading off to the Big House. Were these songs already cooking in the proverbial oven, maybe even par-boiled, before then? Or is this like a Wlliam Faulkner situation with As I Lay Dying? Six weeks or so of pure, godstruck inspiration on the night shift at a utility plant. The approach and production doesn’t feel rushed. But for sure, a song like our highlighted track “Benz” gets borderline silly. Ostensibly a song about material desires under capitalism. The catchphrase sounds a hair’s breadth too close to Oprah’s “You win a car, you win a car, you win car” to hear with a straight face. Nothing wrong with smiling.
