Alt rock piling on top of an already much maligned bird. Our highlighted track is “Albatross,” by Boston’s Sorry, Ma! Plenty of grit and growl in the chord progressions, plus a zippy lead guitar adding fills throughout.

But what’s the operative metaphor here? Something based on the bad reputation of a bird that sailors of yore used to fear. Albatrosses are supposed to have some sort of supernatural ability to fly epic distances, unlike your average seagull, which sticks pretty close to shore.

So if you were pining for the mainland, and spotted an albatross instead of a seagull, you knew you were in for a long sail home. Over time, the bird acquired a bad reputation in general. Fairly or not.
