Mingko: “Lump of Grass”
Boxy, not harsh. “Boxy and harsh” is how Deerhoof describes their music in one or the other spot on the internet. And with the San Francisco band having rolled through town recently, the phrase is on my mind. Mingko has that 90s post punk, indie rock sensibility. Boxy, not harsh. You know, complete confidence that despite the degradations suffered by the electric guitar at the hands of those with evil intentions in previous decades, the instrument still contains all the vicissitudes necessary to tell the human story, if only it’s wielded by the pure of heart. And speaking of vicissitudes, our highlighted track “Lump of Grass” just about maps every last one in a space of 3:32. Compact composition. Off THUMB!.
