Matt Ulery: “The Brink of What”
Written By Michael Gutierrez

Matt Ulery presents jazz with a sense of drama. Sunday afternoon mid-20th century radio program drama. The black-and-white kind with creeping, crawling spiders casting long shadows against the wall. It’s a definite mood, and he’s invited a full cast to help bring the drama to life: woodwinds, brass, percussion, keys and the kitchen sink. The Bandcamp liner notes call it a “rapprochement” of jazz and chamber music, which is a fantastic big dick energy use of the word ‘rapprochement,’ whether it’s true or not.
