Kim Gordon: “BYE BYE”
Is this the most relevant Sonic Youth alum in the pop scene today?
Since whenever Sonic Youth disbanded, after running on empty for years, the members have pursued their own projects. You knew Lee Rennaldo would continue to put out poetry and spoken word and arty sound projects. You knew Thurston Moore would continue to play one-off dates with various avant-garde jazz musicians. You knew that Steve Shelley would… OK, you didn’t know what the hell Steve Shelley would do – maybe production?
And you probably figured that Kim Gordon would get busy making new music because she had been touring and performing with side projects for decades. But did you think her music would be so goddamn good?
“Good” in the sense of fresh, not replaying the hits from her days in Sonic Youth?
What is she now – a kind of techno club rock queen?
Who knows, but the new track “BYE BYE” off The Collective sounds fucking dope. You can say the same about 2019’s No Home Record.
Long live the queen!
