Kamasi Washington: “Prologue”
The “Prologue” is the last track on the album. It’s a very Nietzschean gesture, preparing the way for a philosophy, or jazz, of the future. Whatever you like. Though Immanuel Kant exercised a similar approach earlier with his Prolegomena – and all of his Critiques were supposed to lay the foundation for philosophy (and all the sciences) to begin in earnest on a rigorous foundation. The German Enlightenment loved rigor! What does Kamasi Washington like on his new album Fearless Movement, due May 3? Hard to say – there’s only one track streaming on Bandcamp. But, for sure, just looking at the track list, it’s not a 3xLP like The Epic. But if our highlighted track “Prologue” is any indication, he’s got some epic jazz odysseys waiting within.
