John Dalton’s Sphere of Influence: “Indigo Skyline”
Three songs from this session, all coming in at a punctual and professional ten minutes and change. Jazz can be like that. John Dalton’s Sphere of Influence can be like that. There’s a lot of latitude in how long or short solos go, so you can time the same song to last exactly four minutes, six minutes, eighteen minutes – whatever you like. John Dalton’s on drums by the way, keeping a pretty reserved kind of time with Daniel Ashkenazy on bass while Jim Robitaille dances atop the measure with guitar. The first third of the piece is given over to an increasingly hectic guitar sequence, before giving way to the rhythm section, then finally linking hands to skip across the finish line together. It’s a mellow mind meld.
