DIIV: “Brown Paper Bag”
A cool gazey slow tempo meditation from DIIV. About what? A “Brown Paper Bag”? It’s symbolism, dummy! But symbolism for what? The ephemerality of existence, dummy! Why are paper bags always brown? Because trees are brown, dummy! Paper bags are sturdy enough until they get wet, and then they turn to mush. The usual contrast is made with plastic bags, which can handle moisture, and supposedly last forever. But that’s the real kick in the pants. Plastic bags, in truth, have a very short life. They rip, they tear, they become useless for lugging objects. But the “plastic” part of the “plastic bag” lasts forever. We’re all drinking, breathing, and bathing in microplastics. Makes a “Brown Paper Bag” sound like a good option, but some sort of reusable cloth bag is even better. Off Frog In Boiling Water. Via Fantasy Records.
