See this band live. BCUC is short for Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness. That’s a mouthful, so they abbreviate it for your convenience. But there are no shortcuts when it comes to properly appreciating an artist in their milieu – and BCUC’s milieu is live performance. The ensemble travels the world on the wings of their jazzed-up, funked-up reimagining of the folk music from their home in Soweto, South Africa. Be prepared for call-and-response, psych flavors, wall-to-wall percussion, and a few tent revival diatribes. If the recorded version captures a quarter of the live show energy, it’s worth a listen.
