Seventh String
There’s only one track currently streaming off Makaya McCraven’s forthcoming LP In These Times. It’s a smooth-as-butter mix of strings, flute, and the pit-pat of jungle rhythms percolating in the background. The mood is pregnant, at once soothing and full of foreboding.
The sound and scope of the track is jazz orchestral in an Isaac Hayes-mode. You might call it a departure from his other International Anthem releases, except the songs on this album have been kicking around since his well-received 2015 LP In the Moment. So what’s new, what’s old: who can say? It’s all part of the ever expanding sonic universe of Makaya McCraven.
