Green Day Riot Day
Motion Sick stomps the barricades at Silhouette Lounge on Monday, 9 September 2024.
Born Fools and In The Meantime sandwich the triple-stack bill on the day that Green Day fans rioted at the hatch shell 30 years ago.
The booker behind the local live music series Illegally Blind (puts together the Fuzzstival and more), Jason Trefts, is raising money to start a non-profit organization, staffed by brain tumor survivors, “that will provide free short-term care coordination services for people in the Boston, MA area recently diagnosed with a brain tumor.”
The mission of the project hits close to home for Trefts. In his own words, “I was diagnosed with an incurable Astrocytoma at 24 years old. I have spent the decade-plus since navigating chronic disabling conditions while working in the human services field.”
“Astrocytoma” is a type of brain tumor. And while Trefts has been dealing with that, he has also been working in care coordination himself, observing first hand how important the work is. His proposed non-profit would make more of that important work happen for more people. Find out the details and donate at the Still Around Gofundme.
You wouldn’t know it these days, but once upon a time you could find kids eager to riot at a Green Day show. It happened on 9/9/1994. Here’s the proof.
Hard rocking openers, a two-piece, guitar and drums. It’s Born Fools. Two-pieces like this can pop in a minimalist sort of way, the only drawback being you lack a low end sound without a bass. Not sure what pedals or effect that the guitarist was operating, but there was a real meaty low end on his playing. Full sound.
Michigan’s Motion Sick (possible from Grand Rapids?) performed as a four-piece. The melodic pop punkers are touring the East Coast in support of their debut album What It Feels Like To Be Alive. Available via PWNK Records. Most of the set was off the new album, but for sure they covered Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Going Down.” You know, the “number one with a bullet” song.
North Shore locals In The Meantime brought the friends and family to the gig. It was like a reunion bash. And the drink holder accessories were firmly affixed to the mic stands, so you know where everyone’s head was at. Pop punk, through and through.

A concept record. Who makes “concept” records anymore?
