Orangepeelmystic at the Silhouette Lounge

Orangepeelmystic is your new favorite band at the Silhouette Lounge on Monday, 8 January 2024.

Scove Cone and Blazers Over Turtlenecks dress sharply in the opening slots.

There’s always great music at the Silhouette Lounge, whether it’s live or jukebox selections. People come to expect the background melodies at The House That Hot Dogs Built.

If you arrive at the wrong moment, though, all you’ll hear is the sudsy murmur of conversation and click of pool balls. No music, live or canned.

When’s the wrong moment? The 20-minute or so block of time right before the live music starts. The Powers That Be turn off the jukebox so that the bands can soundcheck within a relatively pristine audio environment.

Bill the Bartender usually fields a few annoyed complaints by customers that just stuffed the jukebox with ten dollars of quarters to play the entire discography of Quiet Riot or G N FUCKING R. Only to have the plug pulled…

What’s a barkeep to do? Suffice to say the sound techs and musicians are getting on with the soundcheck as swiftly as humanly possible. It’s all part of receiving the royal treatment in the backroom at The Sil.

Speaking of Bill the Bartender, he snuck into the show to catch a few seconds of the triple-stack lineup. If it’s good enough for Bill, it’s good enough for you.

Scove Cone

Scove Cone

Was there a band called Raybanned that was supposed to open?

Instead Scove Cone jumped into the mix, warming up with a kind of performance art prelude. The solo guitarist fiddled around with a plastic trombone, marching around the inside of The Sil before doing some quick social media hits on the sidewalk.

Was it part of the act? Who can say for sure…

The main entree of his performance served up indie rock sparklers with those tight, brassy-sounding strings that deliver a real full-bodied acoustic sound. Minimal attention paid to the plastic trombone for the rest of the night.

Blazers Over Turtlenecks

The indie rock three-piece Blazers Over Turtlenecks came through with the blazers. But turtlenecks were nowhere to be seen. Is the combo a bridge too far in 2024? That getup hasn’t seen the light of day since people took Freudian psychology and shag carpets seriously. Does anyone even own turtlenecks anymore? Scarfs do just fine. Blazers are banging though. The frontman had a book of poetry on offer, nestled amid a well-stocked and diverse table of merch.

Orangepeelmystic

Cody Rico of IBOOKTHINGS called Orangepeelmystic his new favorite band somewhere on social media.

Orangepeelmystic

The evidence has since evaporated into the golden, “set to self-destruct” aether of Instagram stories. (Or reels, or what-the-fuck-ever…)

But it’s not hard to guess why. He’s a drummer in Cape Crush, and Orangepeelmystic is a two-piece band that really lets the percussion rip.

Up front and center, of course, is a howling synth operated by a flying Valkyrie, buffeted by the winds of a $17 fan and the rotating lights of a disco Death Star. There’s a lovely neu-krautrock symbiosis between the two musicians, who combine to create massive off-world terrains of sound and texture for the ear to explore.

Check them out. Maybe they’ll be your new favorite band too.
