Rock Nuggets
Norris the Terrible conquers the back room at Silhouette Lounge on Monday, 1 May 2023.
It’s a May Day triple-stack bill with Jim Healey and Mill Pond Falls.
Quick hits, all around on three subjects: pot ads, chicken nuggets, and the Boston Celtics.
Pot Ads
It didn’t take long in the life cycle of legalized cannabis to produce pot ads that insult and condescend to its customer base.
Have a look at this pot ad on the side of a garbage can. Some lifted yahoo too zooted to even walk to the pot store, so he has to call a pot delivery service.
That’s what the business thinks of you, dear valued customer. An idiot sack of meat with only enough mental and physical wherewithal to phone in further self-degradation.
Nothing about the qualities of the product or the speed of the service. Just: “You disgusting piece of shit, you’ll get what you deserve.” In honor of May Day, let’s reflect on the psychological effect of a government built for a nation of consumers, rather than human beings.
Chicken Nuggets
Who makes the best chicken nugget? McDonald’s or Burger King or other? For years the pro-BK faction has derided the quality of the “liquid chicken” McDonald’s nuggets. But have you tried the Burger King version lately? Nothing special.
Boston Celtics
The Boston Celtics dropped a brutal Game 1 in the BOS-PHI playoff series. This was a game at home with no Joel Embiid (out with injury). The talent and depth of Boston was supposed to walk all over the ballhoggery of James Harden and the rest of the Sixers.
You have to think that the Celtics will still win out the best-of-seven series. But we’re getting all the signs we need to tell us that Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown still lack the killer temperament to win big in the playoffs.
It’s a crying shame to watch the hometown team getting pushed around on its own court on the TVs at the Silhouette Lounge.
Jim Healey
Jim Healey was a one-man acoustic machine, churning out alt folk ballads that are a little wondrous and a little mournful. He showcased a new song or two on Monday night’s set. Extra points for a wild fretboard, which traced some interesting patterns on the body of his guitar. Cool ax!
Norris the Terrible
Norris the Terrible performed as a four-piece, crafting rock numbers that tread in mellow waters. Except when the whirling dervish of a frontman got up to speed. Shout out to nice clean solos from the lead guitarist that elevated the energy of the song without getting lost in an overcomplexified swamp of notes.
Mill Pond Falls
Closer Mill Pond Falls has been on bills with Jim Healey before, if you check the Historical Archives (Facebook event pages). So it was a musical reunion of sorts.
The four-piece (from Winchester?) soared on the wings of a heavier rock sound than the earlier acts of the evening.
It was a kind of grand finale barrage of fireworks in a Fourth of July sky to send you home with your ears ringing.
Mill Pond Falls is in Winchester by the way. Nice proximity to Starbucks, Black Horse Tavern, and Winchester Hair Salon for Men.
