Data Map the Starbucks Union Wave

There’s a wave of unionizing efforts going on around the country in business sectors that have not traditionally enjoyed union representation. Starbucks, REI, Trader Joe’s, City Feed, and more. Workers around the country are taking advantage of their right to unionize as established by the National Labor Relations Act (hat tip NLRB).

How big is this wave? How broad? How deep? What’s the success rate for work forces seeking, and winning, union representation? There are a lot of questions. And if we’re going to get a better grip on what works and doesn’t in the fight for labor rights, we need to get some answers.

Hanna Haddad gets us started with a beautiful bit of data visualization about Starbucks union efforts. Poke around his interactive site to get a visual feel for the numbers. Fun fact: as of 6/17/22, more than 87% of Starbucks locations that had an opportunity to vote for a union, voted in favor of a union. That’s a strong turnout for unions.
