State Senate 2nd Suffolk District
The Massachusetts State Senate, along with the State House of Representatives, forms the legislative branch of the state of Massachusetts. The legislative chamber creates laws and sets the budget. Duties of members include passing bills on public policy matters, setting levels for state spending, raising and lowering taxes, and voting to uphold or override gubernatorial vetoes. There are 40 total seats in the State Senate. The length of the term is 2 years.
The current officeholder is Sonia Chang-Diaz (D), who will not run for reelection. Chang-Diaz announced her candidacy for the 2022 gubernatorial race before withdrawing.
The Democratic Party has a deep field of candidates vying for the primary win, with some longshots and a comeback story. Miniard Culpepper (D) is an attorney and the Senior Pastor of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Roxbury. His political focus centers on the themes of housing, environmental justice, civil rights and racial justice.
Nika Elugardo (D) is current a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing the 15th Suffolk District, who assumed office in 2019. She also ran for reelection to her position with the 15th Suffolk District, but will not appear on the ballot. Her committee duties as Representative include House Ways and Means Committee, Housing Joint Committee, and Ways and Means Joint Committee.
James Grant (D) worked in law enforcement for 20 years, mainly with the Department of Corrections. His political focus centers on the themes of affordable housing, education, urban affairs, and photoshop.
Liz Miranda (D) is a current member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing the 5th Suffolk District, who assumed office in 2019. Her recent committee work includes serving on the Community Development and Small Businesses Joint Committee, Public Safety and Homeland Security Joint Committee, and the Human Resources and Employee Engagement Committee (Vice chair).
