Governor
The Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is the elected head of the executive branch and the highest state office in Massachusetts. The governor is elected by popular election every four years and is not subject to term limits.
The current office holder is Charles Baker (R), first elected in 2014. He is choosing not to run for re-election in 2022 after winning by margins of 30+ points in the two previous elections.
The general election features a contest between Geoff Diehl (R) and Maura Healey (D).
Healey is the current Attorney General of Massachusetts, first elected to the office in 2007. She coasted through the primary after Sonia Chang-Diaz unofficially withdrew (though Chang-Diaz still appeared on the ballot and collected 14.4% of the vote).
Diehl has previously served as member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Before he left office in 2019, he was a member of the following committees: Global Warming and Climate Change, Technology and Intergovernmental Affairs, and the Housing Joint Committee.
Diehl faced a tougher challenge than Healey in his primary, beating Chris Doughty by a little over 10 points. The contest was framed as a referendum on whether Massachusetts Republicans were still loyal to Donald Trump or not. Diehl showcased his Trump endorsement and Doughty tried to ding him on it. In the end Diehl won, but its hard to believe he will be trumpeting the endorsement as loudly in the general election.
