Butcher Brown: “I Can Say To You”

On the 20th anniversary of Stevie Wonder’s Innervisions, let’s take a moment to appreciate the legacy. You can hear it in the opening measures of our highlighted track “I Can Say To You” from Butcher Brown. Self-described “groove merchants” who wouldn’t have been nearly as groovy without Wonder lighting up the path ahead. But here’s one development Stevie Wonder never anticipated: hip hop. When the in-band lyric smasher starts dropping bars we’re somewhere over the rainbow beyond Innervisions. Butcher Brown makes the old new again, mashing up genres into a post-soul, funk, hip hop stew that Wonder would never have written, but he might have put on his turntable.
